Most Beautiful Islands in the World, The Most Beautiful Heaven on Earth

slands conjure dreams of paradise; an escape from the rat race, a perfect patch of sand where you can relax under rustling palms and gaze at a serene blue sea. But not all islands are created the same. The beauty of some is defined more by the sea that surrounds them, which can captivate connoisseurs with its crystalline clarity and thriving coral kingdoms. Other islands feature luxuriant jungles and velvety peaks. And some enchant travelers with their cultural jewels. Whether it's sublime beaches, stunning topography, or exotic cultures you seek, these islands lie far from the workaday clamor but close to creature comforts. From the Seychelles to Santorini and the Caribbean to Capri, you can find your very own Shangri-la in this list.

1. Maldives

The Maldives are home to some of the world's most ravishing islands, but it's the sea, which truly makes these islands shine. Luminous aquamarine waters with a crystal clarity lap upon these dazzling white shores, which barely peek above the Indian Ocean. Consisting of 26 natural atolls, the Maldives archipelago is the planet's lowest lying nation, rising no more than three meters above the sea at its highest point, a measurement that shrinks every year. Beneath the mesmerizing waters, coral reefs flourish, luring divers and snorkelers from around the world. Surfers also flock here to ride the uncrowded breaks. Back on land, luxury resorts provide the perfect launching points for adventures focused upon the sea, the archipelago's greatest asset, but also, as the planet's climate changes, its single greatest threat.

2. Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Shaped like a giant sombrero, this lush volcanic island stars in countless South Pacific fantasies. The focal point and best asset of this tropical beauty is its ravishing lagoon in technicolor turquoise. Fish, turtles, sharks, and rays swim in the clear waters, and tiny islets or motus dot the lagoon. The island, of course, is distinctly French, with mouthwatering cuisine to match. Diving and snorkeling are excellent in the surrounding reefs and hiking trails weave through the palm-studded forests. If you can afford it, hide out here in a luxurious over-the-water bungalow and bask in your good fortune as you fall asleep to the gentle slosh of the sea.

3. Palawan, Philippines

Palawan is the Philippine's answer to paradise. This island province stretches southwest to Borneo with lush limestone peaks rising from a jewel-like sea so clear, that you can almost see the expressions on the fish from above the surface. Slivers of gleaming white sand fringed with rustling palms rim many of these jungle-clad islands, while under the water, coral reefs flourish with an impressive diversity of tropical fish, offering some of the best diving in the world. Other attractions include the islands' unique wildlife, emerald lakes, and quaint fishing villages. Coron is home to plush resorts, and El Nido drips with natural beauty and is one of the most alluring islands in the chain. From here, you can island hop around the spectacular Bacuit archipelago. One of Palawan's top attractions is the World Heritage-listed Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, an impressive limestone cave system with a long underground river.

4. Seychelles

Pristine and picture-perfect, the Seychelles are worth traveling for. East of Kenya, this relatively unspoiled archipelago of 115 coral and granite islands feature UNESCO-listed jungles; thriving coral reefs; and palm-lined, powdery beaches flanked by giant boulders. Almost half the total land area of these equatorial isles is protected, and many of the islands lie within fish-rich marine sanctuaries with excellent diving and snorkeling. The Seychelles also feature some of the planet's richest fishing grounds, making this a top destination for anglers. Add some spicy Créole cuisine into the mix as well as the plush resorts of Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue, and it's easy to understand the Seychelles' allure.

5. Santorini, Greece

Encircling a sea-filled caldera, spectacular Santorini scores top points for dramatic beauty. Bleached white villas tumble down volcanic cliffs. Blue-domed churches rise against the sparkling sea, and bright sprays of bougainvillea add to the eye-popping canvas of color. Perched atop the black lava cliffs, the settlements of Firá and Oia are the island's most picturesque, and pricey, destinations, and Oia ranks among the most photographed locations in the world. Other highlights of the island include Akrotíri Archaeological Site, Ancient Thira, the black sand beach of Perissa, and of course, the sublime sunsets. Sailing into this stunning caldera surrounded by soaring sea cliffs makes an unforgettable first impression.

6. The Cook Islands

If you've ever dreamed of being a castaway in the South Pacific, the Cook Islands are for you. Strung between French Polynesia and Samoa but with strong ties to New Zealand, the archipelago's 15 islands are known for their enticing aquamarine lagoons, palm-fringed beaches, and volcanic peaks. Best of all, the locals are among the friendliest in the South Pacific. Rarotonga is the main tourist hub, with its many resorts, lush peaks, and plentiful beaches. Aitutaki boasts the beauty of Bora Bora, without the price tag. Hibiscus-laced villages snuggle on the hillsides, and along its heavenly lagoon lie 21 motus or small islets, many within kayak distance of the resorts. Ensconce yourself here in an over-the-water bungalow or hole up in a rustic beach shack on a remote out island and live your Robinson Crusoe fantasies.

7. Bali, Indonesia

Steeped in an intoxicating culture, the island of Bali is a feast for the senses. Incense wafts from Hindu temples, rice paddies glow in electric greens, and the food jolts the taste buds. Surfing, swimming, shopping, and sunbathing are the prime pursuits on this exotic isle, as well as sightseeing in the lush countryside. Soak up the spiritual side of Bali in Ubud, see Seminyak, and family-friendly Sanur, feel the pumping pulse of touristy Kuta, or explore the attractions on the neighboring volcanic island of Lombok. Bali's enchanting spirit will wash over you like a warm, tropical wave.

8. The Dalmatian Islands, Croatia

In the Adriatic sea off the coast of Croatia, the Dalmatian Islands are an enchanting mix of relaxed charm and rich history. Quaint villages and boutique hotels and restaurants dot these gorgeous isles, which are surrounded by sparkling seas. Top on the list is Brač with the famous beach strip of Zlatni Rat (Golden Horn). Hvar is also beautiful with its Gothic churches, car-free old town, and picturesque fishing harbor. From here, you can zip across to the beautiful Pakleni Islands, known for their crystal clear water and secluded coves. Other must-see Dalmatian islands include Korčula with its red-roofed white-washed buildings, Mljet with its two inland saltwater lakes, and relatively uncrowded Vis.

9. Fiji

One of Australia's go-to tropical escapes, Fiji ticks all the fantasy island boxes. White sand beaches, translucent turquoise waters, and teeming coral reefs are all found here in abundance. And the Fijian people welcome visitors with warm, friendly smiles. Diving, snorkeling, fishing, and in some areas, surfing are all fantastic, but sprawling under a palm tree and slipping into the silky warm seas can be equally rewarding. With more than 300 islands, it's easy to find the perfect match, from luxurious celebrity hideaways and family-friendly resorts to the sublime Yasawa and Mamanuca group. Fijians love young children, so this a fabulous destination for families looking to relax.

10. Kauaʻi

Kauaʻi is called "the Garden Isle" for good reason: Rainforests cloak much of the interior. Waterfalls tumble from lava cliffs, and the intoxicating fragrance of tropical blooms hangs heavy on the sultry air. But the island's beauty lies not just in its luxuriant flora and abundant rain; its spectacular coastline will take your breath away. Lava sculpted this stunning island, thrusting up from the ocean floor to form velvety ridges and vertiginous cliffs rimmed by gorgeous beaches. Beneath its cobalt-blue seas, turtles and tropical fish swim along coral reefs, delighting divers and snorkelers from around the globe. Compared to its popular sister islands, Maui and Oahu, Kauaʻi exudes a low-key vibe and tends to move at a more relaxed pace. Don't miss the breathtaking Nā Pali Coast, 10-mile-long Waimea Canyon, and the cloud-capped vistas from the cliffs above Hanalei Bay.

11. St. Lucia

St. Lucia exudes a dark and brooding beauty. Unlike other Caribbean islands, its best assets are not necessarily its beaches, though with their golden sands and graceful palms, they are popular with those who visit. Rather, the island itself is drenched in topographic drama. The towering Pitons, twin volcanic peaks, preside over the luxuriant landscapes, rising more than 700 meters from the sea, and provide a breathtaking backdrop to the stunning scenery. Bristling forests of coconut palms, waterfalls, quaint fishing villages, coral reefs, nature trails, and healing hot springs are just some of the sights to explore here. Pretty Marigot Bay and Anse Chastanet Marine Park are highlights. The island's French influences also add to its exotic appeal.

12. Capri, Italy

Glamorous Capri, about 20 kilometers off the Amalfi Coast, lives up to all the hype. Sea stacks and soaring cliffs rise from the teal-hued Tyrrhenian Sea framed by sprays of colorful flowers. A popular attraction is the blue grotto, a glowing sea cave, where locals row tourists in on tiny boats and sing opera to demonstrate the acoustics. Once you arrive at the port of Marina Grande, catch the funicular up to the main town of Capri, which feels like a movie set. The piazza here buzzes with impeccably-dressed locals and tourists toting shopping bags filled with designer clothes and the island's perfumes. While you're here, be sure to also visit the highest town, Anacapri, and take the chair lift up to Monte Solaro for spectacular views across the island and sea.

13. Ko Phi Phi, Thailand

In Ko Phi Phi, a small archipelago in the Krabi Province of Thailand, lush limestone peaks rise from the tropical sea, and warm waters lap on palm-lined sugary shores. Slammed by the tsunami in 2004, Ko Phi Phi has now recovered. Its natural beauty still recalls the tropical island dream evoked in the famous Leonardo DiCaprio movie, The Beach, which was filmed here at Maya Beach on the smaller neighboring island of Ko Phi Phi Leh. Ko Phi Phi Don is the only inhabited island and offers day trips to the surrounding islands. Other popular activities include swimming, snorkeling, and superb diving. Don't miss Monkey Beach, famous for its cheeky namesake residents.

14. Whitsunday Islands, Australia

Sprinkled along the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsunday Islands are Australia's version of the classic tropical island fantasy. These 74 lush islands are the peaks of drowned hills rising above the strikingly blue Coral Sea. Sailing is a popular pastime here, and diving is excellent along the fish-rich coral reefs. This is an extremely fragile ecosystem protected by six national parks, and you can explore some of the islands on hiking trails. Accommodation ranges from beachfront campsites, eco-retreats, and family resorts to luxury escapes like Hayman Island and Qualia on Hamilton Island. Don't miss the radiant silica sands of Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island. Airlie Beach and Shute Harbour are the main launching points for Whitsunday adventures.

15. Sardinia, Italy

Blissful white-sand beaches, rugged coastal peaks, mouthwatering cuisine, a unique blend of cultures, and ancient archeological treasures: What's not to love about this saucy Italian isle? Most travelers have heard of the glamorous Costa Smeralda, or Emerald Coast, with its craggy coves and clear green seas, but this large and diverse Mediterranean isle also lays claim to many other attractions. Sardinia is home to the largest canyon in Europe, Gola su Gorropu; prehistoric archaeological sites; the captivating Catalan-tinged town of Alghero; and the medieval streets of Cagliari, the capital. While you're here be sure to cruise along some of the scenic coastal drives and soak up the spectacular views.

16. St. Barts

Stunningly beautiful, yet understated, St. Barts lures movie stars and moguls from around the world, and for good reason. This pretty island offers a luscious taste of France in the tropics, with a relaxed charm that discerning travelers love. Glamorous blond beaches curve around its coastline, backed by rolling green hills. Privacy and seclusion are its other top selling points, but of course all this comes at a price. This alluring island is one of the Caribbean's most expensive, but if money's no object, you can ensconce yourself in a private villa or boutique hotel, dine on gourmet French cuisine until your heart's content, and live the lifestyle of the rich and famous. 20 HEALTH AND BEAUTY TIPS FOR LOOKING YOUNGER THAN YOUR AGE

20 Health and beauty tips for looking younger than your age

Everyone would like to look a bit younger, even if they could just knock five years off their appearance. Some people turn to injections and painful surgical procedures, in their quest for a youthful appearance, but that’s not the only way to do it. There are plenty of ways that you can look younger, that don’t involve a doctor and here are twenty of them:

1. Trim your eyebrows

Yes, something as simple, as trimming your eyebrows, can make you look younger. If your brows are the wrong shape and untrimmed, then they can actually make you look sad, as well as older.

2. Moisturize, every day

Another good tip for looking younger than your age is to moisturize your face, hands and neck every day and it will help to keep your skin supple, fresh and young looking. It’s amazing how much difference this can make, over time, so start your daily moisturizing regime today.

3. Get a good night’s sleep

Sleep gives your body a chance to refresh and rejuvenate it, and a lack of sleep can speed up the aging process. Be sure to get your full eight hours of sleep a night and give your body a chance to recover from its daytime exertions.

4. Cut down on sugar

Our next suggestion for looking younger than your age is to cut down on sugar. Too much sugar is bad for you in many ways, but did you know that it can also be the cause of wrinkles? Cut back on sugary, sweet treats and cut out the soda, and you’ll be doing yourself and your body a big favor.

5. Drink a glass of red wine a day

You shouldn’t overdo the alcohol, but a glass of red wine a day is very good for your health. Red wine contains a healthy dose of the antioxidants that can help prevent free radicals from damaging your skin and making you look older.

6. Get plenty of vitamin C

If your daily intake of vitamin C is 75 mg, or more, depending on your age and weight, then that is believed to help stop wrinkles from developing. That’s only the amount of Vitamin C that you would get from two, medium sized, oranges, so it’s easy to achieve.

7. Whiten your teeth

Another good tip for looking younger than your age is to whiten you teeth. Use whitening toothpaste to keep your smile radiant and bright. Tea and coffee leaves stains on your teeth and this is not attractive, it only makes you look a lot older.

8. Don’t forget you manicures and pedicures

Your feet and your hands can give your age way too, so keep them both in tip top condition with regular manicures and pedicures. Just a little detail, but it will make you feel better and look younger.

9. Get an eye test

Have your eyes tested regularly, because your vision can deteriorate slowly, without you even noticing. When that happens, you will begin to squint, to see things, and that will eventually worsen fine lines around your eyes.

10. Treat brown skin spots

Our next tip for looking younger than your age is to treat any brown skin sports. You can easily treat blemishes on your skin with some lemon juice, diluted in some water. The lemon juice acts as a gentle bleaching agent it will gradually fade any brown spots on your skin.

11. Open up your eyes

Using a light colored eyeshadow will help open up your eyes and make them look brighter and, more importantly, it will make you look younger. Avoid shiny and metallic eyeshadows though, because that looks too false, artificial and can emphasize fine lines and wrinkles.

12. Wear light colored clothes

You have to think about this tip a bit, because, although light colored clothes will make you look younger, dark colored clothes will make you look thinner. See what works best for you, before you decide.

13. Remove makeup at night

Removing your makeup before you go to bed is not just about hygiene and blocked pores. Your makeup also attracts pollutants through the course of the day and, if you leave your makeup on overnight, all those free radicals will stay on your skin and do their damage.

14. Make the most of olive oil

Next great tip for looking younger than your age is to use natural beauty products, such as olive oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, etc. Olive oil, for example, is a great moisturizer, cleanser and all-round beauty product. The fatty acids contained in olive oil are very close in composition to your own natural oils, so it makes the perfect, balanced, beauty product for many different purposes. (Feel free to read our article about 8 ways to use olive oil for beauty here).

15. Lighten up on the lipstick

Keep your shades of lipstick on the brighter, yet lighter side. Severe, dark colors will make you look older and any dark lipstick, with no other makeup at all, will make you look even older.

16. Hairstyle upgrade

Still got the same hairstyle that you had ten years ago? Fashion and styles change, but many people stay with the same hairstyle for most of their lives. Updating your hairstyle will make you look younger and make you feel great and more confident inside too. Try bangs, they will take years off you.

17. Drink water

It’s time for our favorite tip for overall wellbeing, health and for looking younger than your age, and we always repeat this again and again: drink water! Drink plenty of pure, fresh water every single day, because dehydration will damage your skin, your hair and make you look a lot older. It’s also good, if you are trying to lose weight.

18. Smile and be positive!

It’s a fact of life that, as people get older, they smile less. A simple smile and a positive attitude can make a huge difference to how you look. Smiling relaxes your face muscles and wrinkles your face far less, than a frown does. So, give us a smile and let your youthful spirit shine out!

19. Wear a youthful fragrance

Some fragrances just smell younger than others, so be wary of your choice of perfume. If you wear it, because it reminds you of your Grandmother, then it’s definitely time for a change. Choose one your daughter would wear instead.

20. Think young, look young

You are as young as you think, and you don’t need surgery for that. It really is as much a physiological thing as it is physical. If you think young, then you will act younger and everyone will believe that you are younger, than you really are. Our lips are sealed, we won’t tell anyone!

A 7-Step Plan to Lose 10 Pounds in Just One Week

If you want to lose 10 pounds (4.5 kg) in one week, then you need to follow an effective plan.
I've tested this plan on clients who were looking to lose weight fast before an event like a vacation or photo shoot, and it works wonders.
In fact, some of my clients who use this look like they've been on a three- or four-week diet after just one week.
Although it's not a long-term fix, this can kick-start your weight loss journey and motivate you for more sustainable long-term changes.

It Is Possible to Lose 10 Pounds in a Week

While it's certainly possible to lose 10 lbs in one week, it won't be pure body fat.
Due to the calorie deficit needed to burn each pound of fat, it's simply not possible to safely burn 10 pounds of pure body fat in just one week.
However, this isn't to say you can't lose that much weight and still look leaner.
While a lot of the weight loss will certainly come from body fat, you will also drop pounds by losing excess water weight (1).
This is partly because this plan lowers your insulin levels and makes your body get rid of stored carbs, which bind water.
Although your body can only store about 300–500 grams of carbs in a form known as glycogen, stored glycogen does hold around three times that weight in water (1, 2).
Reduced insulin levels will also make your kidneys shed out excess sodium, leading to reduced water retention (34).
Along with reduced body fat and water weight, you may also lose some weight due to less intestinal waste and undigested food and fiber in the digestive system.
Here are the 7 steps you should follow in order to lose 10 pounds in a week.

1. Eat Fewer Carbs and More Lean Proteins

You can lose several pounds by following a low-carb diet for just a few days.
In fact, lots of research has shown a low-carb diet is a very effective way to lose weight and improve health (5, 6, 7).
A short-term decrease in carb intake can also reduce water weight and bloating.
This is why people who go low-carb often see a difference on the scale as early as the next morning after starting the diet.
Additionally, making sure you eat plenty of protein can help reduce your appetite even further while boosting your metabolism (8, 9).
Try eliminating or drastically reducing all starchy carbs and sugars for the week. Replace these with low-carb vegetables, while also increasing your intake of eggs, lean meats and fish.
Check out this article to learn more about how to set up a low-carb diet and which foods to include.

3. Reduce Your Calorie Intake by Following These Tips (See List)

Reducing your calorie intake may be the most important factor when it comes to weight loss.
If you aren't eating fewer calories than you expend, then you will not lose fat (10).
Here is a calculator that shows you how many calories you should eat to lose weight (opens in new tab).
Here are a few simple tips to reduce calorie intake:
  • Count calories: Weigh and log the foods you eat. Use a calorie counting tool to keep track of the amount of calories and nutrients you are taking in.
  • Eat only at meals: Reduce all snacks and don't eat anything after dinner.
  • Cut your condiments: Eliminate calorie-dense condiments and sauces.
  • Fill up on veggies: Fill your plate with vegetables and limit starchy carbs and added fats for the week.
  • Choose lean proteins: Choose lower-fat proteins, such as chicken and fish.
  • Don't drink your calories: Instead, opt for water, zero-calorie drinks, tea or coffee. Protein shakes are fine if you count them as a meal.

4. Lift Weights and Try High-Intensity Interval Training

Exercise is one of the best ways to burn fat and improve your appearance.
Resistance training, such as weight lifting, can lead to a similar amount of weight loss as regular aerobic training. It also helps you add or maintain muscle mass and strength (11, 12).
Full-body resistance training workouts are also a great method to lower your body's carb stores and water weight, which can lead to a sharp decline in weight (13, 14).
Lifting weights can also protect your metabolism and hormone levels, which often decline during dieting (15, 16).
High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is another very effective training method.
Research suggests that 5–10 minutes of HIIT can lead to similar or greater benefits for health and weight loss as five times that amount of regular exercise (17, 18, 19).
Like weight lifting, it can quickly reduce muscle carb stores and also boost other important aspects of weight loss, such as your metabolism and fat-burning hormones (20, 21).
You can perform HIIT three to four times a week after a workout or as part of your normal training regimen. It is very important to do this with 100% effort or intensity. Most sprints should not last more than 30 seconds.
Here are a few protocols you can try. These can be done running in place or outside, or applied to a cardio machine like a bike, rower or treadmill:
  • Session 1: 10 x 20-second sprint with 40 seconds rest
  • Session 2: 15 x 15-second sprint with 30 seconds rest
  • Session 3: 7 x 30-second sprint with 60 seconds rest
  • Session 4: 20 x 10-second sprint with 20 seconds rest

5. Be Active Outside of the Gym

In order to
burn extra calories and lose more weight, you can also increase your daily activity.
In fact, how active you are throughout the day when you aren't exercising also plays a very important role in weight loss and obesity (22, 23).
For example, the difference between a desk job and a manual job can account for up to 1,000 calories per day. This is the same as 90 to 120 minutes of high-intensity exercise (24).
Simple lifestyle changes such as walking or biking to work, taking the stairs, going for walks outside, standing more or even cleaning the house can help you burn a lot of calories.

6. Intermittent Fasting Is Another Simple Way to Reduce Weight Quickly

Intermittent fasting is another effective and proven tool for dropping fat (25, 26).
It forces you to reduce your calorie intake, since you are limiting your eating to a short window of time.
There are many different protocols, such as a 16-hour fast with an 8-hour feeding window, or a 20-hour fast with a 4-hour feeding window.
If you're combining fasting with exercise, it may be wise to do the fasting at a different time than your workout.

7. Use These Tips to Reduce Water Retention

Several other methods can help you drop water weight and appear leaner and lighter. These include:
  • Take dandelion extract: A supplement called dandelion extract can help reduce water retention (27).
  • Drink coffee: Coffee is a healthy source of caffeine. Studies suggest that caffeine can help you burn more fat and lose excess water (28).
  • Mind your intolerances: Eating things that you are intolerant to, such as gluten or lactose, can lead to excessive water retention and bloating. Avoid foods that you think you may be intolerant to.

Take Home Message

By optimizing your diet and training regimen you can lose a large amount of weight in just one week.
Although this won't be pure fat loss, it may give you the kick-start and motivation you need to follow a more sustainable diet.
You do not need to follow all of these steps, but the more you apply, the more weight you will lose.
Keep in mind that people who go on "crash diets" often end up gaining all the weight back when they're done.
When the week is over, you should switch to a more sustainable plan so that you can continue to lose weight and keep it off. #healthline

What a List of Banned Articles Says About China’s Censors

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – An old review of an academic monograph on agrarian revolutionaries in 1930s China is hardly a political third rail in Beijing today, even by the increasingly sensitive standards of the ruling Communist Party.
That such a piece appeared on a list of some 300 scholarly works that Cambridge University Press (CUP) said last week the Chinese government had asked it to block from its website offers clues about the inner workings of China's vast and secretive censorship apparatus, say experts.
President Xi Jinping has stepped up censorship and tightened controls on the internet and various aspects of civil society, as well as reasserting Communist Party authority over academia and other institutions, since coming to power in 2012.
Far from being a well-oiled machine, though, China's censorship regime is fragmented and often undermined by gaps, workarounds, and perhaps even hasty officials, say academics specializing in Chinese politics.
"Crude is the word," said Jonathan Sullivan, an associate professor at the University of Nottingham in Britain. "The blunt way in which articles were chosen for censoring … suggest to me that there was not a lot of thought put into it."
CUP, the publishing arm of Britain's elite Cambridge University, on Monday reversed its decision to comply with the request to censor the articles published in the journal China Quarterly following an outcry over academic freedom.
China's response remains to be seen. The education ministry, foreign ministry, cyberspace administration and state publishing authority all declined to comment.
The list of articles the authorities wanted blocked covered topics that are considered sensitive by the government, including the 1989 Tiananmen Square democracy protests, the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution, Tibet, Taiwan and the violence-prone far-western region of Xinjiang.
But it was far from thorough or comprehensive.
The article on 1930s agrarian revolutionaries may have got there by mistake, say experts.
What appears to have condemned the scathing but otherwise innocuous 1991 review of Kamal Sheel's book about a Communist base area in China's southern heartland was the fact the place was named Xinjiang, and the word appeared in the book title.
The Chinese characters are different for Xinjiang, the village, and Xinjiang, the mostly-Muslim region more than 2,500 km (1,550 miles) to the northwest that is beset by ethnic tensions and occasional unrest. But in English they are indistinguishable.
KEYWORD SEARCHES
Xu Xibai, a doctoral candidate at the University of Oxford, tweeted a brief analysis of the list that noted that its creators appear to have hastily searched the China Quarterly database for taboo words in titles and abstracts.
"The censors probably used a few keyword searches to locate just enough articles to make a nice, long list to impress their superiors," Xu's post said. "They did not bother to read the articles or go through the content list manually."
An article defending Mao Zedong was on the censored list, for instance, while others more critical of the former paramount leader were not.
Some sensitive subjects seem to have eluded the officials' net.
The Communist Party tightly controls discourse on the 1958-61 Great Leap Forward, in which millions starved to death due to ill-conceived economic policies. Censors have banned books on the topic but it was apparently not on this list.
Nor were the brutal, Communist-led land reforms of the 1950s, or the Hundred Flowers Movement, an effort by Mao to lure critics out of the woodwork by feigning openness, only to punish them.
The party's efforts to censor news and information have sometimes backfired or left outsiders perplexed.
In 2009, software designed to check pornographic and violent images on PCs blocked images of a movie poster for cartoon cat Garfield, dishes of flesh-color cooked pork and on one search engine a close-up of film star Johnny Depp's face.
Citizen Lab, a group of researchers based at the University of Toronto, compiled a list of words banned as of last year on popular live streaming sites in China. Among them: "Moulin Rouge", "braised rabbit", "helicopter" and "zen".
The request to block the articles was passed to Cambridge University Press by its import agent, but without knowing where it originated it is hard to draw firm conclusions, said Sebastian Veg, a China scholar at the School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences in Paris.
"The censorship system is of course centrally directed, but not uniform," Veg said.
Lee Siu-yau, assistant professor of Greater China studies at the Education University of Hong Kong, suspects the request was a trial balloon.
"They usually start with something small-scale and gradually expand and make their requirements more difficult," he said.
"This might be one of the first steps that the Chinese government would take to see if it could actually influence international academic publishers."

Cultures collide tonight at experimental dance show

Contemporary dancer Chumvan Sodhachivy, commonly known as Belle, will play a starring role on and off stage in two routines at Phnom Penh’s Department of Performing Arts tonight: an education-themed dance and an experimental Japanese duo.
Belle, who trained at the Royal School of Fine Arts and has danced with Amrita Performing Arts, has choreographed a dance called ABC, which features seven Cambodian dancers and one speaker.
ABC tells the story of a family going about their daily routine, and will include a reading of a classic Khmer poem, written by Krom Ngoy, about the importance of education.
“It talks about education – how your parents give birth to you and teachers teach you to become a good student, a good person,” the dancer said.
“In society right now, some of the younger generation don’t want to study much – they just want to become a star. They think it’s easier and faster to get a job that way. But that’s just the short term.”
Following the performance of ABC, Belle will collaborate with Japanese dancer Yum Keiko Takanawa in Loss, a dance duet produced by the living arts collective A.lter S.essio. Loss, initially written as a solo performance for Takanawa, has already toured countries across the world, from France to Brazil to Canada.
The piece was originally written with a view to being performed in a nightclub setting, said artistic director Fabrice Planquette. Each dancer performs on a white square sheet, and rather than being seated traditionally, the audience gathers around to watch. Video will also be projected onto the white sheets.
Planquette noticed how the audience reaction changed depending on the venue. In Laos, for instance, Takanawa danced in a circus tent, whereas in Indonesia she performed in a traditional theatre. And while the circus audience was noisy and took a lot of pictures, the Indonesian audience stuck to similar codes as in a traditional European theatre.
He added that when performing in nightclubs, they had had a more lively response as the audience were used to this kind of performance art: “They know experimental music; they know experimental video.”
Of changing the performance to suit two dancers rather than one, Planquette said he preferred the exchange between two people rather than for just one performer, and for the dancers to come into contact with the audience. “For me, the writing is made for human relations, for exchange. It’s really interesting to see Belle in this concept. The audiovisual score is exactly the same for everybody,” he said.
The production’s next stop will be Thailand, where Takanawa will perform with the Thai dancer Pichet Klunchun.
Takanawa, who trained with Butoh dance company in Japan, said: “It’s different for me – solo, I really have to concentrate, and with duo I have to concentrate as well, but I feel more energy, because of the other person – so it’s a different experience.”
The performances of ABC and Loss will begin at 6:30pm at the Department of Performing Arts, Street 173. Tickets cost $4 or $2 for under-25s.ThePhnom Penh Post
